The longtime California band, Delta Wires, continues to celebrate the great Chess Records catalog by releasing their latest single, a remake of the great Devil Got My Woman originally done by the legendary Skip James. Appropriately released to all the major streaming platforms on Halloween, this killer release deserves a place in every blues fan’s library.

“People from the South and the East came to work for the railroads and shipbuilders in the military hub of Oakland, Calif during and after World War II,” states the Delta Wires press materials. “As a result, the Bay Area was influenced by the music that came out of those regions, which evolved into the West Coast Blues Sound. Delta Wires was not only inspired by the blues coming out of Chicago, but also by the blues scene which developed on the West Coast.”

The band recorded the song without their usual horn section, but leader Ernie Pinata’s harmonica playing more than punctuates the song and the entire number drives hard through its six-minute plus life. On a personal note, I think the song is exceptional and will be giving it airplay asap. I feel it should be receiving airplay on every blues program.

It is my hope that Delta Blues will release a full Chess-inspired album (including the horn section) soon so that I can sample more of their great playing. In the meantime, for those of you who stream your music, add this one to your playlist and enjoy!
