It’s been a minute since I’ve heard anything from Delta Wires, that great sounding group out of the Bay Area. I remember they had a rich Chicago-style approach to their music with a deep appreciation for the masters of the genre. When I got word that they had a new single out, I was very happy to hear it and looked forward to it with great anticipation.
I was not disappointed…
Band leader Ernie Pinata has chosen a song made famous by Albert King, Searching For A Woman. I got a sneak peak at the track that’s coming out September 23rd on Mudslide Records and Delta Wires is still kicking it in high gear!
Not content with this being just another cover tune, Pinata and company have also made the song as an homage to Chess Records. I think it’s a fair supposition that blues fans know the importance of Chess Records to the modern blues sound that we sometimes we take for granted.
I’m delighted to say that Delta Wires has accomplished their mission and done both King and Chess very well with their release.
Delta Wires is made up of Pinata on vocals and harmonica; Richard Healy on guitar; Tom Gerrits on bass; Anthony Malfatti on B3 organ; Tony Huszar on drums; and a horn section comprised of David Bowman on trombone, cimbasso, and horn arrangements; John Christensen on trumpet; and Caleb Murray on tenor and baritone saxes.
The song is quick, just 3:06 and it never takes a breath. The guitar drives the opening and Pinata is in good voice, the rest of the band giving them a deep pocket in which to play. When Pinata cuts loose on the harp, you can hear the vestiges of the Chicago greats that went before him and the horn section beautifully punctuates the song.
It’s coming out soon (or, if you’re reading this after September 23, 2025 – it’s available now), so reserve your copy now. It should definitely be in your collection!
